"She's the strongest person I know," David says of his 27-year-old sister, who was diagnosed with scoliosis and has only one lung and kidney. "From a younger brother's perspective, it's extremely upsetting sometimes because I don't want my sister sleeping and breathing in these conditions as the room gets very dusty, which makes me concerned for her health," he says. "She has not only one lung but an extremely weak immune system." David Ngo Although he admits it's sometimes easy for him to feel frustrated and mistake her struggle for laziness, especially since he's never experienced what she is going through, he is learning more about mental health every day. "I now understand that sometimes when people are struggling with depression, it's not them being lazy or just simply sad, but it can be about the person just trying to stay afloat and get through the day," he explains. Understanding how draining it can be, he's proud when Jennifer manages the basics, like brushing her teeth or eating a proper meal. He never minds stepping in to help when needed, Even though affection doesn't come easily between the two, they find other ways to show their appreciation for each other. "We don't ever hug or say I love you, but we show love in other aspects, whether it's attention to detail or acts of service," he shares. Apart from just making videos together, the siblings value spending time just the two of them. "Whether it's going out to eat or going to the mall to window shop, or our late-night Target runs – I try my best to be patient with her and make her feel seen and heard," David tells PEOPLE. "I also often pay attention to detail and try to make her feel appreciated by buying her surprise gifts." David Ngo Over time, David has learned to shift his perspective and approach depression with deeper empathy and understanding. When asked what advice he would give to others looking to help their siblings through tough times, he says it is vital to be as compassionate and supportive as possible. "It's more than just being sad. Depression can be debilitating. A simple task can seem like the hardest thing to accomplish. I'd much rather be cleaning a room to help my sister out than to see her fall into a deeper hole," he says. "Love does not always have to be shown through words, it can be actions."
